When the planet of Solaris was destroyed, a massive sewer and hotwater heating system survived, ejected intact, and left floating in void. Its inhabitants survived with it, those who serviced the systems, the gnomes above, managing the heating, and the goblins below, managing the waste. Now living together they have struggle for sixty long years to survive in space using steam technology to provide the necessities of life and slowly improve their standard of living. They call their home, and their hopes of a better future, the Pipedream.

Briefly described in the core book, Broken: The Memory of Solaris, the story of the Pipedream continued in Broken: The Oldest Goblin where Meander and the fate of the Pipedream are brought into question after a meteor destroys recycling, their farming center and source of most of the food for Pipedream.

Broken: The Pipedream looks at this structure in much more depth. The locations and social structure are explained in detail. There is a new class, the Tinkerer and prestige class, the Pipesoldier. There are dozens of NPCs described and stated out for your use. There are two adventures. The first plays out the origin of the Pipedream and the destruction of Solaris. The second resolves the fate of Meander and the Pipedream itself after the meteor strike.

Perhaps the biggest new element is the Devices. These are similar to magic items but they are mechanical in nature. Some duplicate exiting magic items while others have unique effects. Devices have a fuel cost (usually 1/500th the cost of the item) which is consumed each time the device is activated. You can often improve the performance of a device by activating it more than one. However a device activated too many times per day runs into the red-line. This damages the device. Like magic items, damaging a device five times destroys it. You’ll want to repair it before that happens or simply avoid the red line, unless you are desperate, which happens far too often in the void. To construct a device you need the Craft Device feat and ranks in Craft (Steam). Some devices require ranks in other skills. The Tinkerer class, kind of a cleric-rogue without spellcasting, with many skills is the ideal class for Device creation.

There are many new stories. Old characters such as Lady Anna Meinir appear. There are links to get you to other Broken locations such as the rocket they are building to explore the Lost Moon (which ties in with the adventure from Broken: The Lost Moon).

Broken: The Pipedream is more than 80 pages of new material for your broken campaign. This is the 7th book in the Broken series. The first three books for are available for free from The Le Games (www.TheLeGames.com) until later in 2009 when they will be moving over to Charke Publishing. The other four include two free books and two 1$ books from Charke Publishing (www.Charke.ca).
